Davina Porter interview

Here is a very interesting interview with Davina Porter, who narrates the unabridged audio versions of the OUTLANDER books. (Thanks very much to Jari Backman on Compuserve for finding this!)

Part 1:

Part 2 (you may want to skip the first bit; the part relating to her work starts around 2:20)

I was quite amused to hear her reaction, in part 2, to the fact that she'd messed up Donner's voice in ABOSAA (making him sound like a Liverpudlian instead of a Native American). Oh, well, we can hope she'll be more careful with the minor characters in ECHO!

Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Skip the first bit?! And miss the Scottish accent? Not on your life! :-)))))

I didn't get the idea that it was her being careless that caused the inappropriate accent but that she didn't get the completed manuscript in time so didn't know everything she needed to know about the character before she had to start recording

Well, yes, there IS that.... <g>

In my defense, I was sick all weekend with a bad cold and maybe not in a state to appreciate the accent properly.

By the way, Diana had some interesting comments on Compuserve yesterday, regarding the possible timing of the audiobook recording of ECHO.

If, as she says, she's hoping to have a copyedited manuscript ready for Davina to read by early May, that means she must be getting awfully close to finishing the book. Which is pretty exciting!

Thanks Karen. I enjoyed hearing the descriptions of how she does her work -- makes me want to listen to the books via audiobooks. Kristina

I have listened to the first four Outlander books on audio. Porter's voice is magnificent! I'm still looking for the last two on unabridged on audio.

I am in the process of listening to the Outlander series for the second time in anticipation of the latest audio version of the book, An Echo in the Bone coming out. I think the combination of Diana Gabaldon’s genius writing these books and Davina Porter’s huge talent as a reader is sheer poetry. I constantly marvel as I listen and am transported into the story, the sound, the story, it’s absolutely wonderful and the very best way to experience these books by far.

This lady is a treasure! After reading the series 3x, I gave Outlander a try on audio, and fell in love with this lady's performances. They are simply amazing. After hunting the past two years for unabridged versions of all of the Outlander series on audio, I acquired them all, and just finished ABOSAS this morning. Echo in the Bone arrived Friday so the timing is perfect! (I read it so fast, I'm sure I missed a lot.) I've introduced many ladies in my office to this series, and now they are also starting the audio books for their commutes. I picked up a couple of audio versions of other much loved books, but this lady is in a class of her own.

Yes, she does a wonderful job! (Jeff Woodman, who reads the Lord John books, is also very good.)

I recommend that everyone who has read the Outlander Series, must also listener to the audiobooks of the series. Davina Porter is the best. I feel you get more out of the series when you listen to the books.
Most libraries have the audio series. I am listening to them a second time. Enjoy, Marlene

I think 'reading' Outlander in the audio format is really the best way to experience this series, thanks to the wonderful talent of Davina Porter. I would love to be able to follow her on one recording day, just to see what it's like behind the scenes! She's truly made all the characters come to life for me, at least as much as the actors in the tv show!

Brilliant reader! Outlander was the very first audio book I listened to....ever. Imagine my disappointment listening to other books with less talented narrators. Davina's reading has spoiled other narrated books for me. Again...just brilliant.
