Plague of Zombies

Here are some of the frequently asked questions about Diana Gabaldon's novella, "A Plague of Zombies". (Last updated 4/15/2013)

1) What is "A Plague of Zombies"?

"A Plague of Zombies" is a novella by Diana Gabaldon that tells the story of Lord John Grey's first visit to Jamaica in 1761. (This is the same story that was previously published as "Lord John and the Plague of Zombies".)

2) Where can I find it?

The answer to that question is a little complicated.  It depends on where you live.  There are currently several different ways you can get "A Plague of Zombies":

a) If you live in the US or Canada, you can download a standalone e-book of "A Plague of Zombies" for $1.99, starting April 15, 2013.  It is available for Kindle, Nook, etc., but the standalone e-book can only be sold in the US and Canada at this time, due to publishing restrictions.

b) "Plague of Zombies" is one of the four stories in Diana Gabaldon's story collection, A TRAIL OF FIRE, which was published on November 8, 2012, in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.  You can order A TRAIL OF FIRE from Amazon UK, or from the Poisoned Pen bookstore in Arizona if you want an autographed copy.  For more information about A TRAIL OF FIRE, see the FAQ page here.

c) "Plague of Zombies" was originally published in 2011 in an anthology called DOWN THESE STRANGE STREETS, edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois.  That anthology is still in print, in hardcover, paperback, and e-book format.

3) Where does this story fit into the chronology of the Lord John books and stories?

It takes place in 1761, after the events of THE SCOTTISH PRISONER.

For the full list of the order of the Lord John books and stories, look here.

4) How can I get an autographed copy of DOWN THESE STRANGE STREETS or A TRAIL OF FIRE?

You can order autographed copies of all of Diana Gabaldon's books, including DOWN THESE STRANGE STREETS and A TRAIL OF FIRE, from the Poisoned Pen bookstore, in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is Diana's local bookstore, and they ship all over the world. Their staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about Diana's books.

5) Where can I go to discuss "A Plague of Zombies"?

If you have questions or comments about the story, you're welcome to join the discussion on Compuserve here. Diana is on the forum almost every day, and she likes to hear from her readers.

6) Is there an audio version of "A Plague of Zombies"?

Yes!  You can download it from audible.com here.  I'm told that it's also available on audible.co.uk.

Running time is 3 hours 13 minutes.  I've listened to it, and I thought it was well done.

The audiobook is narrated by Jeff Woodman, who does the narration for all the other Lord John books and stories. He's a wonderful reader, and Diana Gabaldon says he sounds very much like Lord John does in her head. <g>

7) What about e-book editions?

As I mentioned above, if you live in the US or Canada, you can download "A Plague of Zombies" as a standalone e-book for $1.99.

A TRAIL OF FIRE is available in e-book format in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. (It won't be released in the US until sometime in 2014.)

8) Why is Diana Gabaldon writing about zombies, of all things?

I've never asked, but I suspect it had something to do with the popularity of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, which had just been published when Diana first began talking about this story several years ago.

And for what it's worth, this story takes place in Jamaica.
