How are you feeling about the OUTLANDER TV show coming to an end?

With OUTLANDER's series finale coming up on May 15th, I have a question: How are you feeling about the show coming to an end? Anxious, relieved, indifferent, sad to see it ending, eager to see how they'll wrap it up, or somewhere in between?

If you're feeling a bit anxious or apprehensive about the finale, perhaps this will help. I posted the following thoughts on TheLitForum a few days ago, and I just thought I'd share them here as well, in case others are feeling the same way.

I think it's natural to feel some anxiety, as the show prepares to come to an end at long last. For those of us who have been watching since the beginning, it's been part of our lives for such a long time that it will be hard to say goodbye. And now that the show has diverged from the books in many ways, we can no longer be sure what they're going to do in the last two episodes, other than Kings Mountain, of course.

I find myself feeling some of that "Don't screw it up! Please, don't screw it up!" anxiety that I had before the show premiered in 2014, when my expectations were still pretty low (but cautiously optimistic) and I really had no idea if I was going to be happy with what they produced. What I was hoping for back then (praying hard for it, in fact) was that they woudn't butcher the plot, alter the characters beyond recognition, or cut some of my favorite scenes. And in Season 1, they managed that, for the most part, and exceeded my expectations in many ways.

I'm feeling the same way now. "Don't screw up the ending!" Please, leave us in a good place, let us come away from the final episode smiling -- even if it's smiling through tears -- and thankful for the amazing roller-coaster ride we've been on for the past 12 years.

That's what I mean when I say that I hope they can "stick the landing" (like an Olympic gymnast), and the worry that they will not is causing me some low-level anxiety. As always, all we can do is wait and see.

What about the rest of you? Feel free to post a comment here or on my Outlandish Observations Facebook page.

  1. Well, since I heard Diana say during the Season 8 premiere something about being “satisfied” with the show’s ending to the story (since it’s ending will definitely not be Book 10’s ending), I’m cautiously hopeful. I think overall there are many parts of the show through the years that were very well done & visually beautiful and brought the Outlander world to life. Other parts, not so much & we can just skip over those in rewatches. I’m having much more anxiety over waiting for book 10 than the show’s ending. ;)
  2. I'll join you in that low-level anxiety! I have mostly really enjoyed the show (always reminding myself the book is the book, the show is the show) apart from the Faith storyline and the Henri-Christian/Fergus switch. I just don't know that they are going to finish up in a satisfying way. I will be happy to be wrong though :)

What I will also miss though is you wonderful Outlandish Observations episode recaps. It's always interesting hearing your take on it - mostly I agree, sometimes I don't but still find your reactions food for thought. Thank you for the huge amount of work you have put into these.
  3. I feel like they've already messed it up in a grand and terrible way by introducing the Faith storyline. I despise it. For me,, there's no coming back from it. I no longer feel sad it's ending because it's so screwed up.
  4. When I heard Sam warn the fans that "not everyone will be happy, but...", I knew right then that the powers that be were going to give it a GOT ending. Sure enough, that seems to be where it's heading with only maybe 3 out of 8 episodes being re-watchable, and only 10 episodes and viewers having to wait through yet another break before the final two episodes. Maybe that break was a chance for fans to get their anger level down from Fergus' death (unnecessary and cowardly on the part of the showrunners) and the fan fiction of the Faith storyline. There was plenty of source material left in the books that was buried by fan fiction that they should have used instead of the unimmersable concept that Faith lived, turning Mother Hildegarde and Master Raymond into kidnappers and liars. Shame! I had cancelled Starz immediately after Episode 7, but when I learned Ron Moore took control back with Ep. 8, I reinstated my subscription until the last two Eps. have aired. I'm worried that Diana's contribution will not be used and others, who aren't near the caliber of her talent, will keep their egomaniacal hands off!
  5. Hi Karen,

I'm also a little worried about how the series will end. I hope they don't mess it up, otherwise I won't be able to watch Outlander anymore, and that would be a shame.

They already ruined the episode "Faith" for me. I'm hoping for an ending we can all live with, one that doesn't spoil the enjoyment of the previous episodes.

I always look forward to your summaries and your opinions on everything. I don't always agree with you either, but I always appreciate a different perspective.

I'm eagerly awaiting book 10! Because a proper ending can only come with Diana's books!

Have a wonderful weekend; it's still Friday here in Germany!
